Dear Long Beach Unified Community,

Preparations continue for transitional kindergarten through fifth grade to resume in-person instruction on March 29, with middle and high school students to follow on the April schedule as previously announced.

The adjusted COVID-19 case rate for Los Angeles County was 4.1 per 100,000 this week, continuing the downward trend of recent weeks. This continued good news for community health is allowing the Long Beach Unified School District to proceed with its reopening plans.

For TK-5, preparations for in-person learning will include the return of teachers during the week of March 22. During that same week, many elementary students will meet teachers and participate in orientation activities and COVID screening. Parents should please remain in touch with their school for details, including communication about arrival and dismissal processes. Schools are holding virtual parent information meetings to review health and safety protocols and answer questions. Parents also are encouraged to continue talking with their children about this time of transition.

Middle Grades and High Schools
Middle and high school in-person learning on hybrid schedules is still set to begin on this timeline for families who choose that option:

April 19 – Grade 12
April 20 – Grades 6 to 8
April 26 – Grades 9 to 11

Middle and high school families also should please remain in touch with their school for details as the reopening dates approach.

Sports and Other Activities

Last week, we were pleased to continue the reopening of sports and other activities. Watching football games in March feels different, but the joy of game day was palpable among our students, staff and parents. We’re also seeing the return of other outdoor sports including baseball, cheer, cross country, softball, tennis, golf, and even water polo, with teams using the outdoor aquatics center at Cabrillo high school. We thank Cabrillo for being a gracious host.

Some instrumental music activities have begun, including outdoor drum lines and small ensembles. Specialized masks are on order for singers and wind instrument players, and larger scale outdoor rehearsal and performance activities will likely resume when middle and high schools reopen to in-person learning.
